Z.ai was founded in 2019, growing out of research at Tsinghua University, and is based in Beijing. Formerly known internationally as Zhipu AI, it adopted the Z.ai brand in 2025 and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in January 2026.

Its models combine reasoning, coding and agent capabilities, and several are published under the MIT License. It also builds vision-language models that understand images and video.
