DeepSeek was founded in July 2023 by Liang Wenfeng and is funded by the Chinese hedge fund High-Flyer.

Its models use a mixture-of-experts design and focus on reasoning, coding and agent tasks. Its open-weight releases are published on Hugging Face, mostly under the MIT License, and its models are also available through DeepSeek's own API.
